Who is Volodya in The Beginning of Spring by Penelope Fitzgerald?

Volodya is the young student, who breaks into the Frank's business and actually fires a couple gunshots at Frank when he arrives to investigate. Frank does not turn the boy in, and even goes so far as to negate the night watchman's claims that he heard gunshots.
