Who is Pankratz from The Beggar Queen and what is their importance?

Pankratz is one of Cabarrus' followers. He is the ruthless murderer, who is chosen as the would be assassin of King Constantine, but he dies in the attempt, after begging the king's forgiveness and exposing Duke Conrad's plan to assume the throne and overthrow the Beggar Queen of Westmark.
