One major theme in the novel is that of illegal immigration. Through the characters of Esperanza and Estevan, we see that illegals are portrayed sympathetically. Mattie also makes it her mission to help those in need. In this, we can infer that Kingsolver is sympathetic to the plight of illegal immigrants.
