Who is Zeph in The Beach by Alex Garland?

Zeph is a young American that Richard meets on the beach in Ko Samui. He's tall, blonde haired, handsome and athletic. He's also a student at Harvard University. Zeph and his friend Sammy like to play people they meet on their travels by acting as if they're something they're not. An example of this would be the act of acting like the brainless surfers we see in movies. Zeph is ultimately shot and killed by Thai guards after following a map Richard leaves him.
