The trumpet is a symbol of the Massimo family’s gloating. The trumpet appears in the story “Drunken Fireworks.” Alden and his mother are most angered when the Massimo boy who owns the trumpet blows it after the Massimo’s have set off a round of fireworks that were louder or brighter than those set off by the McCauslands. Alden and his mother do not feel completely vindicated, even when they set the Massimos' house on fire until they notice that the family has abandoned the trumpet on the dock.
