The green mass, a symbol in the story “The Little Green God of Agony,” represents pain. Pain is difficult to understand because it cannot be seen. It cannot be measured except by the person who is experiencing it. Because pain is so intangible in nature, it is easy to assume that a person might be faking pain. Kat, Newsome’s physical therapist, believes that Newsome is exaggerating the pain he is feeling. Rideout, however, identifies Newsome’s pain as being caused by possession. He "calls" from Newsome’s throat a ball of green goo that he claims is the reason Newsome’s pain was so severe.
