Who is Ashley Reed from The Bar Code Tattoo and what is their importance?

Ashley Reed is Kayla's mother. She is a nurse, and she was bar coded before the opening of the novel. Over time, Ashley becomes depressed and reveals to Kayla that the bar code contains genetic information used to determine which people should live and which should be killed. Ashley kills herself trying to burn the tattoo off her wrist.
