Newspapers are used as a symbol for the mouthpiece and doctrine of modern society. While MacIan and Turnbull are unable to convince anyone of their ideological doctrines, people all throughout England are willing to read and believe whatever they see in the newspapers. This is why once the story of MacIan and Turnbull’s duel works its way into the newspapers, society at large actually begins to notice them and pay them attention, with some even rallying behind their cause.
