The city of London, with all of its secular facets and wonders, symbolizes the attitudes and lifestyles of the modern world. MacIan views the city as something he can conquer and set right with his religious teachings, while Turnbull views the city as something he can sway to the cause of socialism and irreligiousness through his publication. However, the modern society that exists in London seems to want nothing to do with either character and ignores them entirely.
