Fishermen symbolize power and pursuit. At the beginning of the poem, the beloved is compared to a fisherman who attracts all the fish to her through her simple desirability. The speaker asserts at the end of the poem that the beloved has no need for traditional fishing methods, criticizing those who pursue erotic love through power and force alone. At different times in the poem, the beloved and speaker switch roles between who is the "fish" and who is the "fisherman."
