One of the main themes in the novel is that of glory seeking. The bigger Jesse's legend.... the bigger he wants to become. Jesse not only commits the crimes.... he brags about them. He enjoys the newspaper articles.... and makes sure he leaves his name, lest somebody get it wrong.
