The novel is divided into six chapters, each approximately one day long with the exception of Chapter 5, which includes a two year long time skip. Each chapter is numerically labeled and are relatively short in length. The longest chapter in the novel is Chapter 2, as it covers the man’s first impressions of and experiences within the new country. The shortest chapter is the final one, Chapter 6, as Tan brings the novel to concise and positive ending that focuses on the man’s happy new life with his family.
