In “Monopoly,” competition and greed are demonstrated not only by the game in question, which involves a literal competition to see who can end up with the most money or property, but also by the symbolism behind the game’s origins. The idea for the game was stolen by a man from a woman, showing not only how modern capitalism encourages a race to the finish line for inventors and creatives but also how the system is inherently patriarchal, often dismissing women’s contributions to invention and success. The game is illustrative of the path Western societies have taken, heavily influenced by capitalism to the point where competition for competition’s sake seems logical and not unfair.
