For Jacob, knives represent violence, suffering and pain. Accepting the ceremonial knife given to him as a mark of his transition from boyhood to manhood is almost unthinkable to him, as reluctant as he is to be associated with anything that has the capacity to cause pain, let alone death, to another being.
