The first point to note about the book’s use of language and its communication of meaning is that there is a potent, defining sense of collage about the book – that is, the sense that meaning can be understood as much through the juxtaposition of narrative events and thematic contemplation as through narration of the events and deepening of contemplation themselves. It is the placement of image, of feeling, of incident that communicates the author’s ideas as much as the content of these various components.
