The graveyard symbolizes Zuckerman’s tortuous relationship with his deceased parents. Zuckerman takes the elder Mr. Freytag to a cemetery to see the grave of the recently deceased Mr. Freytag. Zuckerman, volatile in part due to drugs and alcohol, directs an angry diatribe at Mr. Freytag and the graves in the graveyard. Zuckerman says that in Jewish culture, the dead have too much power over the living. This diatribe is an indirect expression of his anger and sadness about the death of his parents and his imperfect relationship with them.
