What is the main conflict in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon?

The main conflict in the novel is self vs self..... trying to figure out exactly how to solve a problem or effectively escaping them. Over the course of the novel, the main characters come up against some pretty tough predicaments.... predicaments they will either face head on or escape on order to avoid them.
