Political conflict is a recurring idea of The Alexiad and while many of those conflicts are external, quite a few are internal. Being the ruler of an Empire is not easy. Many are envious of your position and a few are in a position to attain it if the Emperor is not careful. The Ducas family nearly did the same and proved a threat to Alexius for a time until he gave them a share in power.
