In Part IV, Chapter 12, Williams' great-great-grandmothers' slave owners were lawyers and her mother joked that law was in Williams' blood. Williams noted that her mother wanted her to reclaim her heritage, but in that reality devalued herself. Williams took the blood secret to Harvard with pride and shame.
