What is the setting of The Age of Wire and String by Ben Marcus?

This book is not set in a named place, or, more accurately, the only place in which it appears to be set is Ohio, but that does not appear to be the state of Ohio. Instead, Ohio is the narrator's term for "house." Most of the descriptions in the book do not refer to a specific family in a specific house. Instead, the book contains a series of generic observations about people in houses.
