Robespierre was a lawyer whose ambition led him straight into the upper levels of the French government after the French Revolution. He was a major figure in the Reign of Terror, as well as a leader of the Jacobins. Robespierre's power was without measure for as long as the Jacobins remained a force, but once their political influence declined in 1794, Robespierre was arrested and executed.
