Napoleon was the leader of France. He made a name for himself during the French Revolution, rose through the miltary ranks, and was eventually proclaimed First Consul. Under Napoleon's leadership, France embarked on a period of war that lasted almost twenty years, expanding France's influence throughout Europe and into Africa.
