At the core of the struggles of the central characters in each of the three plays in this collection is a struggle for power. Dikaiopolis, Strepsiades and Lysistrata are all (each?) determined to manifest a sense of independent, individual strength, a sense of control in a world and society where they feel as though they have none. There are significant differences between the three in why they want that power and in how they go about achieving it - Dikaiopolis' initially selfless desire devolves into what appears to be something greedier and more self-indulgent, which is where Strepsiades' desire begins and stays ... at least, until he realizes that his selfishness may very well result in his own destruction.
