Mr. P confides in Junior that he was not a good teacher. In his younger days, white teachers were taught to abuse their Indian students. They were taught to force assimilation on them. Mr. P is not proud of this. In a way he did not mind getting hit in the face with a textbook: he feels as though he deserves it.
