William Shakespeare is a fictionalization of the real life man responsible for all of the plays that the King’s Men performs. In the novel, he is quick-witted, flirtatious, and an outstanding actor. He is also aware of and supports magic that others would see as witchcraft such as Joan’s connection to the Orisha. Throughout the novel, Shakespeare remains a staunch ally to Joan, even encouraging her to keep faith in Ogun because the Orisha never abandon their children. This encouragement is what allows Joan to accept Ogun’s blessing again to defeat Auberon.
