As we read the play's final act, we begin to see that in many ways, the fate of George, Tom, James and Phil serve as a metaphor for Scranton's decline. When they won the championship, they were on top of the world, however, the events that occurred in their life in the years since that magical day have prevented each of them from realizing their full potential.
