Fred lived in the Central Valley of California after his mother left his father and they moved in with his grandmother. Fred worked in middle school as a janitor's assistant and in high school as a picker in the vegetable fields. He served in the military and then went to college. he got an undergraduate degree in child development and a graduate degree in Vietnam. He got a job with the VA and worked there for many years.
