Thanatopsis (Poem)
How does Bryant use metaphor in the poem, Thanatopsis?
.
.
The earth is metaphorically referred to as a “couch” for man to recline upon in death at two points in the poem (34, 81). This invokes the idea of nature ingratiating humanity into its fold, supporting life and giving sustenance and succor in death. This imagery implies that the structures of the natural world are fashioned, like furniture, with some kind of divine intentionality and purpose.
