The boots that Seraphina gives Tess represent her chance to escape her past. Only by going on a journey, just as Seraphina did at the same age, can Tess find herself. By putting on the boots, Tess is acting on her desire for adventure and go on her journey. They also represent a commonality between Tess and Seraphina. Both were ostracized for who they were: Seraphina for being part dragon, and Tess for having a curious heart. Both left on their own journey, and Seraphina is an example to Tess of what she can be if she strives to be her own person. Every journey begins with a single step, and Tess needs to take it in sturdy boots such as these.
