What is the significance of the rust Laks spots on his kara in the novel, Termination Shock?

When Laks spots a speck of rust on his kara, he is worried that his relationship with his religion is also becoming rusty. As a result, he decides that he needs a renewed sense of purpose to keep himself from becoming rusty, like his kara has become. The rust represents his renewed sense of purpose.
