This novel is told from the point of view of a third-person narrator. This narrator focuses on certain characters, including Saskia, Rufus, Laks, and Willem, in his telling of the story. For these characters, the narrator is able to report their thoughts and emotions as well as actions and the words they speak. For other characters, their intentions are shared only when shared aloud with another character.
