For Tom, fire represents the rage he feels at the injustice of his sister's death. When he is being burned alive by the flames aboard The Nemesis, Tom shouts in rage, not pain. Fire symbolizes his unconfined anger--anger toward the justice system and toward the unfairness of losing his little sister so early on in life.
