How does the sight of Rock Harbor provide Meg with a sense of hope in the novel, Ten?

When Meg sees the flickering lights of the harbor and thinks of the people there, carrying on with their lives, and feels a renewed hope in the knowledge that there are other humans out there. The lights of Rock Harbor remind Meg that they are not alone, as small and lost and far away as they may feel.
