In the story, Janaza, the wedding band that Harold throws out the window of his moving car represents the hold that white society still has over him. At the body washing ceremony for a mentor of his named Michael, his white wife angrily storms out to prevent the ceremony from even taking place, and his friend, James, warns Harold that having a white wife could lead to the same thing happening to him upon death. Harold throws his own wedding band out of his car as he drives home, possibly signifying the end of his marriage.
