Author, Katie Williams is a master of analogy. For example, Val’s “I felt the tears waiting there behind my eyes, like a person who holds his hand on the doorknob but dares not turn it and step through” (153) astutely describes both the feeling of holding back tears as well as the aspect of vulnerability that places one at that threshold. It holds a truism of human nature, much like Saff who summoned up Pearl’s phone calls to Rhett every three days while he was at college as “As much as you can stand, as little as she can” (237). The sharp insights into human behavior and our motives undress us without warning in this novel, and readers understand these futuristic characters as extensions of ourselves.
