Jessie's photograph of her and her mother symbolizes Jessie's longing for a return to the life she once knew and the subsequent knowledge that such a return is impossible. The picture depicts Jessie as a young girl wrapped around her mothers leg in a tableau of familial love and stability, which is precisely what lacks in her new life. Rachel also examines the photo both times she enters Jessie's room, indicating that Rachel herself longs for the same stability that she, Theo, and her late husband presumably had. Rachel's utter lack of photos in her own home stands in stark contrast to the fact that Jessie's sole decoration is a photograph, and Jessie eventually suggests to Rachel that she "put out some pictures too [. . .] so he can remember" (312).
