Writing was an important part of Christine's recovery, especially as a means of coping with getting through each day. She made notes about all the things that happened during the day and said the diary became something of a lifeline. She was able to write this book partly by looking back through the things she wrote during a time when she could remember nothing. She explained that “Writing saved my life. I did not write that down. But of that I am certain” (46).
