Ice cream, a cold luxury in Havana, at first symbolizes the seemingly impenetrable divide between the capital’s rich and poor. Rachel K is a frequent visitor to “La Rampa, a grand avenue of deluxe Sunday parlors where the rich strolled around and licked” (37), a favorite location of her wealthy patrons. After the revolution, Cuba’s Communist regime twists the meaning of the frozen treat.
