The faerie queen is only present in the poem through the speaker’s memories. She is depicted as someone cruel, duplicitous, and seductive. However, she also displays moments of genuine affection for Tam Lin. She represents the dark side of femininity, and the wild changeability that directly juxtaposes the off-page Janet’s domesticity. The faerie queen is entirely a product of the natural world and a foil to the ordered mundane world to which Tam Lin was ultimately restored.
