“Tam Lin Remembers the Faerie Queen” is a 60-line free-verse poem in nine stanzas. The stanzas are irregularly spaced, ranging from a single line to the longest stanza of 17 lines. As a free-verse poem, it doesn’t rely on a standardized metric rhythm or rhyme scheme; lines range from five syllables to 13 syllables, and individual sentences begin at only a single syllable. The longer stanzas are largely focused in the centre of the poem, while the shorter ones occur at the beginning and the end. The shortest stanza, at only one line, is the very first line of the poem. This gives the narrative a feeling of building intensity, descending again once the speaker returns their thoughts to the present day.
