One of the poem’s most disconcerting moments comes when the speaker recalls live butterflies as a fairy fashion choice: “living butterflies unto their shoulders, / so they moved in a halo of colored dust / and panicked flapping” (Lines 38-40). This moment is notable because it suggests that unlike Tam Lin and many others who accompany the fairy people, the butterflies can see through the illusions and understand their predicament in a real and visceral way. Here, the butterflies represent the breaking down of fairy glamour and a hidden window into reality.
