Why does Hamlet kill Polonius?

After the play before the king, Claudius asks Gertrude to send for her son. Polonius is hiding behind the hangings of Gertrude's room in order to overhear the conversation. Hamlet, hearing him, stabs the hangings thinking it is Claudius. However, he kills Ophelia's father instead.
