At the beginning of The Winter's Tale, Hermione gives birth to a baby girl in prison. Paulina, Hermione's friend, asks to take the baby to the king, thinking his heart will soften. However, the king orders the babe be taken to sea and left on a desert isle to perish. He does not think it is his child.
