Why does Wes ask August to take his sons to Yellowstone in the novel, Take Me With You?

Wes is an alcoholic and is headed to jail for his fourth DUI charge at the time he meets August. Wes asks August to take his two sons with him on his summer trip because the boys will have to go into state care if he can't find a place for them while he's in jail.
