In the Epilogue, why did the narrator decide to go to Tracey's and what did she decide when she arrived?

The narrator's mother had told her to go to Tracey's and see about the children. The narrator went to do exactly that. Then as she approached Tracey's flat, she saw Tracy and her children dancing. She realized that the children were not hers and never would be. Instead she could do something else to help.
