In Early Days, Chapter 8, what would happen when the narrator's mother would try to cook?

The narrator's mother could not spend 15 minutes in a kitchen without being reduced to self-pity. She would start to make something like vegetarian lasagna. The process would be so torturous, that she would manufacture an argument and storm off. Then they would end of eating Findus Crispy Pancakes.
