In Chapter 7 of Middle Passage, why did the narrator's father say in the flat after he and the narrator's mother split up?

After the narrator's mother and father split up, here father still lived in the flat and slept in the same room. They could not afford a real divorce. Plus the narrator's father could not leave, because someone needed to take care of the narrator, and her mother could not do that.
