In Chapter 4 of Middle Passage, how did authority shift between the narrator and her mother?

The narrator and her mother argued about her spending time with Tracey's father and the narrator not being interested in books. When the narrator's mother told the narrator not to take another step, there was a shift in authority. They both realized that the narrator could dance right out of her mother's life.
