In Chapter 2 of Middle Passage, what were age mates and how did they help Lamin?

Age mates were people that had grown up in the village with Lamin, been in the same class in school, or else were in his year at teacher's college. Age mates gave one another better prices, issued tickets more quickly, and waved you through lines.
