The cricket Grandpa brings home for Junie symbolizes love. Junie is moved by the cricket, because she feels sorry for its entrapment yet is reluctant to let it go. In much the same way, the characters work to balance their desire for closeness with each other, with their need to let their loved ones live independently and freely.
